Sea Transport and Port-Related Activities

Maritime Law

Maritime transport forms the backbone of the firm’s general Transport Law practice. Highly skilled in advisory work and litigation, the firm has managed and continues to manage literally hundreds of cases and issues.

Its clients include carriers, P&I Clubs, traders, port operators and port authorities.

The firm deals with all standard issues of maritime law :

  • cargo claims

  • ship arrests

  • ship auctions

  • stevedoring and goods handling contracts

  • shipping agency contracts, etc.

Given the full-service nature of the firm the maritime lawyers furthermore focus on issues where maritime law is combined with other areas of the law such as labour law, social security, administrative and environmental law, corporate and finance law, which is quite a rarity in Belgian maritime practices. Examples of Ambos NBGO’s work include:

  • electricity generation in port areas

  • labour law conditions on board sea-going vessels

  • freedom of services in port areas

Port Operations

Given its presence in Belgium’s three main seaports, Antwerp, Ghent and Zeebrugge, Ambos NBGO specifically focuses on all companies operating in the port areas.

Ambos NBGO works for port authorities, stevedoring companies, storage facilities, insurers and insurance brokers, forwarding and shipping agents, customs brokers, etc.

Work includes advising on the various contracts involved in port operations, setting up company structures for such operations and dealing with incidents and accidents in the port (damage to terminal unloading installations, oil pollution, collisions, etc.).
